Karinya Suffolks, located 280 klm south of Perth at Kojonup Western Australia just west of the Perth Albany highway

After several years of purchasing Suffolk rams to produce prime lambs stud principals John and Julie Philipps decided they would like to breed their own rams. Going with the principal that they still wanted Suffolks in 1991 they purchased an entire stud flock consisting of  27 ewes, 13 ram lambs and 15 ewe lambs from RW & MA Phair of Denmark WA. Today  the stud mates approximately 150 ewes producing between 150 and 200 lambs annually

As part of our commercial sheep enterprise we mate 3000 merino ewes of which 2/3 are mated to Suffolk’s for prime lamb production. We have also started to mate merino’s to Dohnes for  future 1st and 2nd cross prime lamb mothers.

Lambplan participants since 1997 we are continually striving for genetic gain. In earlier years we concentrated on increasing our growth rate to cater for our own purpose of sending prime lamb to market straight off their mother’s .As with the change of market priorities and more emphasis on lean meat yield we are now endeavouring to put more muscle into our Suffolk’s whilst still maintaining good growth rates. 

Our interest in the breed has continued to grow over the years to where we now show and sell stud rams and ewes plus a number of flock rams offered for sale  privately on farm.

 

So why choose Suffolks?

We first entered the prime lamb market in the early 1970’s. After trying several other breeds we settled on the Suffolk. These were chosen for:

• their ease of lambing due to their finer heads and smooth shoulders
  clean points,( no grass seeds)
• their ability to handle harsher conditions
• quiet temperament
• their easy identification especially for merino breeders.
• Provide the market with Suffolk x prime lamb that assures quality carcasses as well as a superior taste.
• Suffolks still continue to be a leading force in the prime lamb industry  as indicated by their success in various competitions (eg the WAMMCO international lamb carcass competition).
• Registered Suffolk breeders continue to strive for genetic gains that keep the Suffolk as a leading choice for prime lamb production.

Shows

Our first foray in to the show ring was at the Northam Spring Show and Sale in 1998 where we were fortunate enough to win a couple of ribbons and sell our first Stud ram. Since then we have continued to show at Northam and other shows including the Perth Royal, Wagin Woolorama, the Williams Expo, Albany Agriculture show and our local show at Kojonup. In 2007 Karinya Suffolks have had pleasing show results with the stud achieving Champion Suffolk Ram and Champion interbreed group at the Wagin Woolorama and  Champion ram, Supreme interbreed Ewe and Supreme interbreed group at the Williams Expo.  At the recent Northam show we also achieved  Champion Ewe and Reserve Champion Ram.
